the geomagnetic field for two forms of spatial orientation: (1) shoreward orientation, which utilizes only directional (‘compass’) information (Phillips, 1986a,b; Phillips and Borland, 1992a,b; Deutschlander et al., 1999a,b, 2000; Phillips et al., 2001) and (2) map-based homing orientation (‘true navigation’), which utilizes both compass and geographic position (‘map’) information (Phillips, 1987; Phillips and Borland, 1994; Phillips et al., 1995, 2002; Fischer et al., 2001). The magnetic field provides a source of compass information that is used both in shoreward compass orientation and the compass component of homing (Phillips, 1986a,b, 1987; Phillips 3903 The Journal of Experimental Biology 205, 3903–3914 (2002) Printed in Great Britain © The Company of Biologists Limited JEB4241

Widespread infection of the Eastern red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) by a new species of Amphibiocystidium, a genus of fungus-like mesomycetozoan parasites not previously reported in North America.

Given the worldwide decline of amphibian populations due to emerging infectious diseases, it is imperative that we identify and address the causative agents. Many of the pathogens recently implicated in amphibian mortality and morbidity have been fungal or members of a poorly understood group of fungus-like protists, the mesomycetozoans. One mesomycetozoan, Amphibiocystidium ranae, is known to ...

Ferromagnetic material in the eastern red-spotted newt notophthalmus viridescens

Behavioral results obtained from the eastern red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) led to the suggestion of a hybrid homing system involving inputs from both a light-dependent and a non-light-dependent mechanism. To evaluate the possible role of a receptor based on biogenic magnetite in this animal, we performed magnetometry experiments on a set of newts previously used in behavioral ass...

The “False Breeding Season” of the Eastern Newt, Notophthalmus viridescens

The terrestrial red eft stage is so different from the body form of the aquatic adult of the eastern newt that the two were considered separate species for nearly 60 years. Some populations lack the eft stage whereas in other populations the adults are aquatic only during the breeding season. In populations in which the adults are permanently aquatic or migrate to breeding ponds in fall, an aut...

The Relative Abundance of the Juvenile Phase of the Eastern Red-Spotted Newt at Harvard Forest Prior to the Arrival of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

The invasive insect pest Adelges tsugae (Hemlock Woolly Adelgid) threatens the ecologically unique Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock)-dominated forest type throughout its range. Relatively little is known about how the loss of this forest type will affect the relative abundance of amphibians. This study assessed the relative abundance of the juvenile phase of Notophthalmus viridescens viridesce...

A reference transcriptome and inferred proteome for the salamander Notophthalmus viridescens.

Salamanders have a remarkable capacity to regenerate complex tissues, such as limbs and brain, and are therefore an important comparative model system for regenerative medicine. Despite these unique properties among adult vertebrates, the genomic information for amphibians in general, and salamanders in particular, is scarce. Here, we used massive parallel sequencing to reconstruct a de novo re...
